ROYAL'S LATEST: AN ELEGANT RETREAT IN THE BAVARIAN MOUNTAINS

Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria

Few will be unfamiliar with the image of Julie Andrews and her young charges frolicking in the mountains somewhere in Switzerland in the famous film The Sound of Music - but do you know where it was shot? In the immediate vicinity of a little town called Schliersee, Bavaria - and the good news is that it remains as picturesque as it was in those early Technicolor days. And why are we singing its praises? Well, because this is the site of Royal Resorts latest acquisition, AlpenClub, which looks set to be another of our flagships, this time in Europe...

What does Bavaria bring to mind? For some it will be that breathtaking landscape - the mountains, lakes and waterfalls. Others will love the winter sports like skiing, snowboarding and still others will be drawn to classic Bavarian culture - yes, we're talking Lederhosen clad men, beer gardens, schnapps and Wiener Schnitzel! Whatever your fancy, the AlpenClub is the ideal base from which to enjoy this spectacular corner of Bavaria.

Schliersee itself is a quaint little town that retains much of the traditional culture for which Bavaria is famous. There are two main seasons - summer (April - October) and winter (November to March) and each offers its own attractions. Summertime activities include boating on the local lake, trekking, pony trekking and generally immersing oneself in nature - whether that means a picnic in a quiet valley by a burbling brook or whiling away an afternoon in a rural beer garden. In the evening, a favourite haunt is the Rathaus, which conceals a cavernous basement area complete with lederhosen clad waiters. In all these spots, you will find an excellent selection of both beers and wines.

In winter, Schliersee is transformed into one of Europe's premier ski resorts - the two main areas are Taubenstein and Stumpfling, which offer great skiing and snowboarding for both beginners and intermediates, making them popular weekend options for residents of nearby Munich. As a result, the après ski activities can be as exhilarating as the slopes! Besides skiing and snowboarding, tobogganing and ice-skating on the lake are both popular and fun activities.

The aforementioned Munich with its famous beer festival, excellent shopping, nightlife and dining options, is just an hour away by train. The Altstadt (Old Town) in the town centre is home to most of the city's museums, churches, beer gardens (the most well known and popular being the Hoffbrauhaus) and the famous Marienplatz Square with its glockenspiel - a mechanical marvel.

The first of our Royal Owners to experience AlpenClub are in for a treat - we're confident that the resort will become one of our most popular, whether in Asia or Europe. But don't take our word for it, come and experience it yourself! AlpenClub boasts 88 units, offering a choice between hotel rooms and self-catering one and two bedroom apartments, each spacious and fully fitted with kitchen and dining area. We think you'll love the classic German dining options - freshly baked bread rolls for breakfast, wurst for lunch and pork knuckle for dinner - outstanding! Amenities include a beautiful restaurant, bar and lounge area as well as a spa, indoor heated swimming pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, kiddies play room, outside play area, games room and even a bowling alley. You'll have to tear yourself away to go and enjoy those mountains!
